Walt Disney's honorary Oscar for Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs

Held at the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles, this is the first time that an oscar ceremony went hostless. It honored movies released in 1938. All the acting winners, except for supporting actress winner Fay Bainter, were repeats. Another first was that a foreign language film got a nom for best picture. That film was Jean Renoir's Grand Illusion. 5 sets of Honorary Oscars were given out: J. Arthur Ball for cinematography advancement to technicolor, Walt Disney for Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs, Gordon Jennings, Jan Domela, Devereaux Jennings, Irmin Roberts, Art Smith, Farciot Edouart, Loyal Griggs, Loren L. Ryder, Harry D. Mills, Louis Mesenkop, Walter Oberst for special effects and sound effects work on Spawn Of The North, Oliver T. Marsh and Allen Davey for technicolor cinematography work on Sweethearts, and Harry Warner for short subjects displaying America's early struggles. Deanna Durbin and Mickey Rooney each took home Juvenile Awards.
