This marked the very first time that the awards acknowledged documentaries. The attention geared towards Joan Fontanne and Olivia de Havilland in the Best Actress category. It honored movies released in 1941 and was hosted by Bob Hope in the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles. When Fontanne won , she became the only actress to win for a Hitchcock movie. Walt Disney earned an Irving G Thalberg award and shared the honorary oscar with Leopold Stokowski, William Garity, John N.A. Hawkins, and RCA for their work on Fantasia. Rey Scott also earned his Honorary Oscar for producing Kukan, and the British Ministry of Information earned theirs for the documentary Target for Tonight.
