Whoopi Goldberg became the first woman and African American to host the telecast solo. All 4 acting winners were first timers including Tom Hanks who, in his acceptance speech, paid tribute to a gay teacher he had. Paul Newman was given the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award and Deborah Kerr got an honorary Oscar for a full career's worth of brilliant performances. Meanwhile, 2 Scientific Technical Awards were given: one to Panavision for the Auto Panatar anamorphic photographic lens and one to Manfred G. Michelson of Technical Film Systems, Incorporated, for the design and development of the first sprocket-driven film transport system for color print film processors which permits transport speeds in excess of 600 feet per minute.
