Billy Crystal returns to hosting duties in the Shrine Auditorium. Kevin Spacey became the 10th performer to win both the leading and supporting acting Oscars following the footsteps in past winners such as Robert DeNiro, Helen Hayes, Jack Lemmon, and Ingrid Bergman. Spacey then dedicated the award to Jack Lemmon for being an inspiration of the character he played in "American Beauty." Angelina Jolie followed in the footsteps of her father Jon Voight when she won for her performance in "Girl Interrupted." Warren Beatty was given the Irving G Thalberg Award while Andrzej Wajda was given an honorary Oscar for five decaeds of extraordinary film directing.
