The clip from The Broadway Melody

Best Actor winner Warner Baxter

Event[]

For the very first time, the winners have been announced through radio broadcasting. The ceremony was held 8 months after the eligibilty period, so to bring the event closer to the relevant time period, they held the 3rd Academy Awards in November of that year. Number of categories changed from 12 to 7. The presenters were not announced in advance. The ceremony is notable for being the only ceremonies without official nominees. AMPAS research resulted in a number of de facto nominees, all of which wre based on records of which films were evaluated by the judges. The ceremony honored movies released between August 1, 1928 and July 31, 1929. This is the only year where all the film winners had only taken home one award. Held at The Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, it was hosted by Cecil B. DeMille's eldest brother William C.
